Im not having a great weekend

Im not having a great weekend

I shouldn’t say it wasn’t great. I still did 180 miles in 2 days. But it was the series of events and the way they unfolded that made me feel like crap.

It started off with the Friday night swim. It was 90 plus degrees and Im doing 2 miles in the full wetsuit. Talk about Spontaneous Combustion! I think I lost 8 pounds during that workout. Then it was off to The Russell Inn for some beers and a pizza. The problem is that I consumed 3 pints of steel rail (no water) and Im supposed to be doing 110 miles at 7:15AM. 3 pints usually isn’t a problem. But, I don’t drink enough during the day and I just did a swim workout. Slight headache when I go to bed. Slight headache when i wake up. Plus my stomach feels like a toilet. So i run down to Dunkin D’s and get a muffin and a coffee. This is not exactly the the of breakfast to be eating before a century, but it gets better. I can’t even eat the muffin (this aint gonna be good). The good news is that no one is at my house and I get to ride solo to Noho. This means that i can do whatever speed my body can handle (as long as Im there in an hour and fifteen minutes). The ride to Noho actually made me feel better and I stop at a store near the Gazette and wuff down a couple of pop tarts. They went down and thank god I got some food in my system. Now i am at the gazette and I now have 5 other people to ride with (Kelly, Justin, Dave Gubala, Jim B and Scott Main), and the pace should be somewhat mellow because Kelly is racing tomorrow. So we cruise North to Northfield and then bang a left onto Rt. 10. This is were i told everyone we could crank this section. It’s not easy because it is a gradual clim all the way to Rt. 5. Plus we had a headwind for added pleasure. I worked this section hard and now Im hungry! I pull into the general Store and they got sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches. I buy it and eat about 2 thirds of it and then my tummy starts to rumble. Okay, this might have been a little to aggressive for nutrition in the 90 degree heat. My plan is to ride and make it all better. Off we go. The miles click away but the breakfast sandwich is making me feel yukkie. We roll into Noho and Im not going to ride home solo. So I pack it in with 85 miles and hitch a ride with the wife. Not bad on some pop tarts and that might have been all the food that i actually digested. Then it was off to Mark and Mikki’s for more Steel rails and now I can EAT! and eat i did!

Sunday AM was another century 5:50AM start from my house to Greenfield and back. Why so early! Cause Im a freaking nutjob! It’s because the Greenfield Tri is today at 8AM and Im gonna ride up to see the team and then ride home. Ron Jacobs is the only brave soul to be at my house for the early ride. Then it’s off to Greenfield. On the way North we stopped in Noho to pick up Steve, Dawn and Mark. They preferred the 7AM start time from the Gazette. We took some great roads to Greenfield and the temps were perfect. We pull into greenfield as the swimmers are just coming out of the water. It hurts to watch a race when you know that you just can’t do it without screwing yourself up worse. But it still gets me fired up when Im there. The Cyclonauts came out in full force and it was cool to see all the Black and Yellow. After watching the bikers finish, Ron and I had to journey back to Westfield. The ride home was fairly fast and I just wasn’t feeling like I had it. Im not sure if it was the fact that my nutrition was all messed up on saturday or I was just having a crappy day. Whatever, I still got in 95 miles. Not bad for a broken down GramPa.
